Fitzjohn’s Avenue Traffic Changes – Consultation Extended to 13th July!

Camden Council is proposing major changes to traffic arrangements on Fitzjohn’s Avenue. As we’ve been listening to residents in recent weeks it’s become clear that many local residents aren’t aware of the plans, so your local Liberal Democrat councillors Tom Simon, Judy Dixey and Matthew Kirk have secured an extension to the consultation period until Sunday 13th July.
The main changes proposed include:
- New cycle lanes, including a segregated lane northbound/uphill along Fitzjohn’s Avenue.
- Consolidating the bus stops to speed up bus flows, including removing the bus stop outside St Mary’s School and moving the stop for Belsize Lane – see detailed plan overleaf. The northbound bus stops would be “floating” i.e. the cycle lane would run between the pavement and the bus stops.
- Introducing a “Healthy School Street” on College Crescent outside University College Pre-Prep School. This would mean restricting traffic along College Crescent between 7.45 and 8.45am and 2.45 and 4.15pm.
We welcome plans to improve pedestrian safety and cycling networks, but there are some real flaws in the scheme as proposed. We’re most concerned about:
- Big gaps between the bus stops, which will make access to public transport harder for those with mobility issues
- The floating bus-stops – we know that these are unsafe for elderly and vulnerable people, especially those with impaired vision, or for those with children and pushchairs.
Whether you support or oppose the plans, it is important you make your voice heard. We urge you to look at the full proposals at consultations.wearecamden.org (search for “Fitzjohn’s Avenue”) and respond via that website or by email to safetravel@camden.gov.uk.
