On Monday 13th July, Camden Council held its first Full Council meeting since the appointment of the Mayor in May.

Cllr Tom Simon gave a speech as Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, which focused on the grave outlook for the council’s finances. The Labour’s government has effectively cut funding by £80-95 million over the next three years, with £65m of savings required in the next financial year alone. For contrast, the total savings the council was required to make 2010-24 was just under £200 million. In his speech, he remarked “In recent years, we heard frequently from the Labour benches that things would be better under a Labour government, and in 2024 the refrain was along the lines of ‘just wait and see’. We have waited, and now we see what a Labour government means for funding for Camden Council. And what we see are the most severe cuts that this council has ever had to make in its history."
